Multi Use Games Area (MUGA)

When faced with a shortage of space or limited funds, a multi use games area (MUGA) surface comes into play. Many of our Multi Sports surfaces have been installed into schools, clubs and local authorities throughout the country, and Playrite currently offer a range of six highly accredited sports surfaces to suit many individual needs.

To help you select the right product, here are some points you should consider when specifying or choosing an artificial sports surface:

“Which sport or sports take priority?”

This question is not only directed to an Architect but to a large extent the end user, as they have the final decision on which sports or activities will be played.

The answer can be very dependent on the type of surface you specify. The PE teacher will possibly list multiple sports that will be played throughout the years curriculum, yet many of these specific ports may only be played for a few weeks at a time. It is important to select a surface based on which sports will be played the most.

"Do we require a shockpad?”

This again is a question that requires some thought and planning. If high intensity and impact sports are to be played a shockpad is recommended, certain Governing Sports Bodies for example the Football Association prefer a shockpad for soccer.

If your selection incorporates a 3G long pile/high infill you require dry weather for completion, having a 3G surface will restrict the number of sports that can be played.

“What maintenance schedule is actually achievable?”

Will your client have in house maintenance, or will they need to source external contract maintenance? What costs and what is in the budget to provide maintenance and finally? The total budget for the project can be very decisive on the size of project to be built.
